STP Devotional for the Week of 10/28/24
Hey, everyone! My name is Bethany Davies, although you probably know me as Bethy. I’m the music director for NEVERLAND, but I also co-wrote the show with another STP alumni, Maddie Pope. Maddie tackled the book, and I took on the music and lyrics, and we are beyond excited for it to premiere this week at STP!
NEVERLAND is a steampunk retelling of J.M. Barrie’s hit play, “Peter Pan.” Our version features the Darling children as young adults when they travel to the mystical island packed with pirates, lost boys, fairies, the inventors society, and perhaps even the Tick-Tock-Croc.
As Maddie and I were in the writing process for this show, we really latched onto Romans 10:13-15.
“For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed?
And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’”
Romans 10:13-15
NEVERLAND has two themes, depending on your walk with Christ. For the unbeliever, this show tells the audience that all it takes is faith and trust in Christ alone to receive eternal life. For the believer, a saved Child of God, it calls us to recognize how simple the gospel is, and that no matter your path in life - in your career, your education, your family - the will of God for the believer is to share the gospel.
“Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.” Romans 12:11
It’s so easy to be a strong Christian and be vocal about your beliefs in Christian environments - such as STP - but it’s much harder to proclaim it in the world. To be zealous means to show great enthusiasm or great energy in pursuit of a cause. Paul urges us to be zealous for Christ, fervent in praying and talking with the Spirit, and to serve the Lord.
So the questions I want to ask you are these: Firstly, are you a child of God? Do you believe it only takes faith and trust (and no pixie dust) to receive eternal life? If you have any more questions about that, please ask your directors or TTAs. They would truly love nothing more than to talk to you about a relationship with Christ! Secondly, if you are a believer, are you more zealous in your silence, or are you more zealous in your proclamation of the gospel?
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…Remember I am with you always even unto the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20
The Great Commission is the last earthly command Jesus gave us before His ascension. He tells us to “make disciples of all nations” and that’s exactly what we should strive to do.
So, to wrap it all up, all it takes is faith and trust in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection to receive eternal life. Once we’ve received the eternity God freely extends to us, He commands us to proclaim it to all.
I hope you’ll join us for NEVERLAND to cheer on your staff and TTAs! Come soar with us past the second star and to the right, to somewhere otherworldly this Wednesday-Saturday. Stay zealous and do good things!
