STP Devotional for the Week of 04/13/26
Today we come to the last sections and the most taken-out-of-context verse in the Bible. Does anyone know what that verse is? Verse 13: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” People use this verse as if it gives them some sort of superpower over sporting events, business meetings, financial prosperity, you name it! We need to read the verse in context, however, to understand what Paul wants us to get from it.

I believe verse 11, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content,” is at the center of the context for these verses – contentment. It means that Paul knows he just needs to rely on God; that God’s plan is best for him, and he needs to rely on God’s promises. Verse 12 tells us that Paul has had his share of plenty and want. He gives us the secret of facing all of these things; a secret that helps us live a life of rejoicing here on earth. The secret? “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Not his surroundings, not his friends, not times of plenty, but God.
Paul goes on to say that he is thankful for the emotional and monetary support of the Philippians but points out that it is God in them that encouraged them to do so. It is a fruit of following Christ. It is why Paul is thanking the Philippians and encouraging them to follow him as he demonstrates what following Christ can do for and give to believers. He knows that even without the Philippian’s support, God would sustain him in all situations.
So, how do we tap into this peace and power?
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
We’ve learned from our studies in Philippians this year that following God’s plan leads to the only true success – an eternity spent with Him in heaven. We’ve also learned that we need to rejoice in all situations, even the most difficult ones, because
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full
effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4)
Let’s all press on to the goal for the prize. God will strengthen us in every circumstance when we choose to follow Him.
Let us finish well!
“To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Philippians 4:20)
