STP Devotional for the Week of 11/18/24
What does it mean for us that Jesus Christ is King? Let’s look at three way s.
First, we must realize that the cross is the defining point of Jesus’ reign as King. He did everything needed to cover our sin so that we don’t bear the punishment of it. Think about it: we were dead in our sins and deserving of God’s wrath. His wrath! His anger! We deserve death. (See Eph 2:1-3)! But God sent us a King who conquered death for each of us.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ
even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:1-5
He didn’t stay in the grave though, if He had He would have just been another martyr. But God raised His perfect Son from the dead! This proves Jesus is the victor over Satan and sin. Jesus is the King of our salvation because He conquered death on the cross. But how does this apply to our lives?
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—Ephesians 2:6-8
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with
him in a resurrection like his. Romans 6:5
Second, Jesus is King over all creation. Everything that was created on earth and in the various galaxies – all of it was created by Him.
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all
things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones
or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:15-17
The universe was created by Jesus, He sustains it even now, and it is completely dependent on Him. He is the King of the universe. This truth helps us to think biblically as we live in the world created by Jesus. We can trust Him with every situation that arises in our lives, with every mystery we don’t understand, there is rest in knowing Jesus is King over all creation.
Third, Jesus is King over the future. We have hope in knowing that our lives will not end with our deaths. King Jesus will ultimately conquer death. Every enemy of His will be put under His feet.
Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying
every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his
enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 1 Corinthians 15:24-26
We look forward to the day when we can see the head that was once crowned with thorns is crowned with glory. How does knowing these three truths about Jesus the Conquering King affect our lives?
● Jesus holds every part of our lives together. When hard times come and we don’t see a way out, King Jesus rules.
● When we are scared, we can take our fears to Jesus the Conquering King whose enemies will be a footstool for His feet.
● When we are discouraged in our daily lives, King Jesus reigns from the beginning of the day to its end — every single day of our lives!
● His reign influences the way we treat others and our relationships. We serve others and love our enemies because that’s what King Jesus did when He forgave those who put Him to death.
● We can choose to live joyful lives because Jesus the Conquering King rules over all things and is our friend. He cares about you and me. We can put away our grumbling attitudes and turn to our King Jesus knowing He loves us.
● King Jesus will come again, all evil will be conquered, and we will live with Him forever!
