STP Devotional for the Week of 10/12/26

The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed,

a stronghold in times of trouble. Psalm 9:9

Psalm 9 is another song of thanksgiving and praise. David is thanking God for delivering him from his enemies who wanted him dead. The addition here is that David is also showing concern for others who are also afflicted by enemies. David previously praised God for being a reliable source of security for all who seek Him. Now, David gives God the glory by telling us that God alone has more power than those who oppress us and that God can deliver the exploited from those meaning to do them harm.

Let’s look at the word “oppressed” for a moment. Oppressed means “burdened by abuse of power or authority.” In America, we don’t experience this as much as in other countries that are war-torn and fighting battles for whoever will be in charge, but there are times when we can feel burdened.

David is assuring us in this psalm that God is sovereign and that He sees and supports those who are vulnerable. In what ways can we feel oppressed? Homework piling up? Bosses who seem unreasonable? Multiple demands on our time – parents, school, work? Temptations – gaming when you should be studying, on the phone when you should be cleaning up? Are you putting too much pressure on yourself – to be the best in school, most popular person in your activities, perfectionism?

God knows and understands all the concerns we have. He doesn’t magically “poof” them away, but He will always provide rescue in times of need. As for temptations, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

God will provide divine protection during distress or adversity, but we must call on Him. He wants us to be certain in our faith and rely totally on Him for protection and guidance. He is not a genie in a bottle that grants wishes. He requires our complete devotion and love. It may seem like a lot to give, but God gives so much more back – protection from our enemies, peace and safety, and above all the comfort of knowing that someone all-powerful oversees the universe, not flawed and failing humans.

Even though we can’t see God and sometimes feel He can’t hear us, we can’t allow these ideas from our enemy to eat away at our confidence that God is in control and is always listening to the prayers and petitions of those who believe in Him. If you haven’t already, take a step today and accept Jesus as your Savior. He will protect you and give you peace.

AT HOME:

• Do you recognize God as having the power to destroy your enemies?

• Do you trust that God will deliver you from those who want to harm you?
