Psalm 18:2

STP Devotional for the Week of 09/21/26

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Our theme this year is “The Lord is My Stronghold.” We will take time this year finding the verses that display God’s strength and His steadfastness.
Has anyone been to a real castle or medieval fort? What did you notice about it? Location on high ground? Materials of construction, moat, bridge, watchtower, turret?
Examining the word “stronghold” reveals it as fortified place, a place of security and survival, a secure retreat. What does this imply?
A stronghold is designed with robust construction, made of durable materials and defensive
architecture. It is located in a strategic location. What makes up a strategic location? It has
physical barriers to ensure safety – moats, sturdy walls, massive gates. A strategic location also has operational continuity. In other words, it supports long-term occupation – food, water, shelter. All of these characteristics of a stronghold show that it is difficult to attack or
conquer but is a place of protection and shelter that can withstand any trial.
In our key verse for the year, notice that the psalmist uses “my rock” several times. Do you
remember what Jesus taught us about building our house on rock versus sand? In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus describes the house built on rock as being able to withstand rain, floods, winds, and many other trials. He’s not describing a physical house, but a spiritual house. If we accept Christ as our stronghold, we too can withstand trials of this world that seem overwhelming.
Another comforting phrase is “in whom I take refuge.” It means we can turn to Him and He will provide shelter and peace. “In whom” means within His loving arms and within His grace and mercy. We don’t have to face any of life’s trials alone – we can turn to Him and He will help us stand against Satan’s fiery darts. The psalmist refers us to God as a shield that can deflect the enemy’s attack.
The final words, “horn of my salvation,” is like the Narnia horn. It symbolizes God’s power to save and His strength and kingly authority. When Satan hears this horn, he knows the battle is over. God alone can deliver us; God alone is our stronghold.
Calling God our stronghold or refuge or fortress or shield or horn of salvation helps us to see Him as our protector, caregiver, authority, and strength in all situations. Last year we studied Philippians and learned about rejoicing in all situations. The only way we can do this is to call upon our rock and build our lives upon Him.
AT HOME:
• Are you leaning on Jesus to be your stronghold in all situations?
• How does knowing He is your stronghold help you confront difficulties in your life?
