Names of Jesus: Capstone/Cornerstone

STP Devotional for the Week of 3/17/25

What is a capstone? In architecture, it is a finishing stone placed at the top of a wall or building. In education, it is typically a final project or presentation that allows students to demonstrate what they have learned during their studies. It can also mean someone's greatest achievement or the crowning achievement of a career. Each one of these definitions fits our Savior completely. I think the most important definition is the stone at the top of the building. Did you know that the center stone or capstone holds up the entire arch? Without it, you can’t have an arch. Without Jesus, you can’t have eternal life.

Another interesting note about a capstone is that it is the completion of the arch. It isn’t the first stone placed but it is the most important. Without a capstone, you just have a pile of rocks. As the

capstone, Jesus holds all the broken pieces together and completes what is unfinished and imperfect. We need a capstone. We are imperfect and unfinished and in need of saving. Jesus is the fulfillment and completion of God’s divine plan. He is the only one who can fill the empty, imperfect spots in our lives because He is the promised Savior who brings God’s plans to fruition.

The next stone referring to Jesus is the cornerstone. A cornerstone is the stone that unites two masonry walls at an intersection. One of its purposes is to provide a way to line up the remaining building blocks and keep the walls on a straight path. Jesus makes our path straight even in the most difficult times as long as we keep our attention focused on Him.

...therefore, thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am

the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone,

a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure

foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’

Isaiah 28:16

The other purpose of a cornerstone is to hold up a corner of a building. It provides stability for the rest of the building. It forms the base of the structures and holds the walls

firmly in place. Jesus tells us that we are to build our foundation on Him.

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a

wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods

came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because

it had been founded on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25

Jesus is both the capstone and cornerstone of our lives, providing stability and completing what is unfinished. He alone provides the way to salvation, but we have to seek Him on a daily basis. He isn’t hard to find, He’s in your Bible, He’s walking with you every day, He’s watching and guarding you.
